Frequently Asked Questions

1. how far in advance should i book?

Most clients book 3–6 weeks in advance, especially for weekends and golden hour spots. If you need something sooner, reach out — if i have space, we’ll make it happen.

3. where do sessions take place?

Sessions happen on location in the southwest Iowa area or at select indoor spots/businesses I partner with. Once you book, we chat about your vibe (moody woods, cozy downtown, field at sunset, etc.) and choose a location together.

2. what if i'm awkward in front of the camera?

Perfect. You’re my people. I’ll guide you with simple, emotion-based prompts instead of stiff poses. Think: “walk toward me like you’re telling a secret” or “pretend you’re dodging a kiss.” You don’t have to know what to do — that’s my job.

4. do you photograph kids / families / plus-size / neurodivergent / queer folks?

Yes. Always. This space is explicitly body-neutral, LGBTQIA+ affirming, and neurodivergent-friendly. If you need accommodations (extra time, sensory breaks, stim toys, no-touch posing, etc.) just let me know — we’ll build the session around what makes you feel safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

5. how long will our session last?

Most sessions last 60–90 minutes. Some multi-location engagement sessions may run closer to 2 hours, depending on outfit changes and locations.

7. what does the $50 session fee include?

The session fee reserves your date and covers:

• planning & styling

• location scouting

• the actual shoot

• a private online preview gallery

Digital files, prints, and albums are purchased separately once you’ve seen your images.

6. can we meet before the session?

Absolutely! I offer a free consultation upon inquiry. We can meet in person or via Zoom and discuss anything you'd like about the Life is a Darkroom experience.

8. why don't digitals always come with the session fee?

Because I want you to only invest in what you truly love. Separating the session fee from the collections gives you flexibility — you’re not locked into anything before you see your images. Mini sessions are a little different, where you will receive a minimum of 8 digital images with print release.

Frequently Asked Questions

13. when will i see my photos?

You’ll receive your preview gallery within 2–3 weeks of your session date (during the busy season, this may be closer to 4 weeks, but I’ll always communicate this upfront). I will also send a sneak peek between 7–10 days after our shoot.

15. what is your editing style?

Moody, cinematic, a little magical, but still true to skin tones and natural beauty. Think depth, emotion, and story — not orange, crunchy filters or over-smoothing.

14. how many images will be in my preview gallery?

2025–2026 season:

• portraits: 25–40 images

• engagements: 40–60 images

• elopements: 60-120 images

The exact number varies by session, but you’ll always have enough variety to choose from without feeling overwhelmed.

16. do i get printing rights to my digital album?

Yes — every purchased digital includes a print release for personal use.

Frequently Asked Questions

18. where do you recommend printing digital purchases?

If you're in a pinch and only want 4x6, FreePrints is a great option. I do recommend my own 4x6, 5x7, and 8x10 prints.

20. do you retouch skin or bodies?

Light retouching for blemishes + distractions. I don’t reshape bodies. We embrace what makes us beautiful here rather than erasing it! If you have specific requests, let me know before your edit.

19. can i order prints or albums later?

Definitely, though ordering within 30 days gives you the best access to promos. Reopened galleries may include an archival fee.

21. what if the weather is bad and we planned an outdoor location?

Overcast = beautiful. Storms, blizzards, extreme temps = reschedule. We’ll decide together 24 hours before. If you're open to a studio setting, once Darkbloom Studio is up and operating, we can shift locations.

25. i'm nervous for my boudoir shoot—is that normal?

Totally. we take our time, keep things consent-driven, and move at your pace.

27. what should i wear?

After booking, you receive a prep guide with outfit ideas + styling tips. We can also incorporate personal items.

26. will you post my boudoir shoot online?

Only with written permission. you control what’s shared — from anonymous crops to full images to none at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

29. do i need to tag you when i post?

Yes — it’s in the contract, it gives me proper credit as someone who worked very hard on your results, and helps other clients find me. If repeatedly ignored, this contractual breakage could make you responsible for damages compensation of $50 per instance.

31. do you accommodate neurodivergent, disabled, or anxious clients?

Always. We can build in breaks, reduce sensory load, use direct instructions, or communicate via text instead of calls. We are also planning to create Darkbloom Studio in the most inclusive, sensory friendly way we can.

30. what if contract terms are broken?

Repeated violations may result in additional fees or refusal of future services. The contract protects both of us.

32. do you photograph kids / families / plus-size / neurodivergent / queer folks?

Yes. Posing is collaborative, body-neutral, and tailored to what feels affirming to you.
